Chapter 5

Prakriti

Five months had a way of changing things quietly.

The building was no longer just a structure under construction—it had a rhythm now. And so did her days. Meetings flowed easily. Decisions were quicker. Conversations didn’t always begin with formality anymore.

Neither did they feel careless.

Prakriti noticed it during a site visit when Rudraksh arrived with his usual calm—and a rare hint of amusement in his voice.

“You’re early,” he said, glancing at his watch. “That’s new.”

She raised an eyebrow. “You’re late.”

He smiled, brief but genuine. “Then we’re both improving.”

They stood near the framework, reviewing notes. At one point, she pointed at a section of exposed concrete and said, “I warned you about this finish.”

“You warned me,” he agreed. “I ignored you.”

She looked at him, unimpressed. “And now?”

“And now I accept my fate.”

She laughed—softly, surprised by how easily it came. He noticed.

Their conversations had started to wander beyond the project. Not far, not deep—but enough. Shared observations about long workdays. Quiet comments about how neither of them enjoyed large gatherings. Mutual understanding of why friendships never came easily.

Once, while reviewing plans, she said casually, “Do you ever feel like work becomes your only constant?”

He didn’t answer immediately. Then he nodded. “It’s simpler that way.”

She understood.

They teased each other lightly after that. She called him predictable. He called her unnecessarily precise. Neither of them meant it as criticism.

Yet when discussions turned professional, the shift was immediate. Voices steadied. Laughter faded. Boundaries returned, untouched.

Prakriti realized their friendship worked because it knew when to pause.

And somehow, that made it feel safe.
