Chapter 6 — The Comfort of Being Close

After that evening, things became easier between them.

Not louder.
Not bolder.

Just easier.

They began sitting a little closer by the well. Close enough that their shoulders almost touched. Close enough to feel warmth without reaching for it.

Sometimes she spoke while he listened. Sometimes he did. Often, neither of them did.

She laughed more now. Soft, quiet laughs that surprised her. He found himself smiling before he even understood why.

Once, she rested her basket beside him and stayed longer than she meant to. He noticed how she leaned toward him when the air turned cold, not fully, just enough.

He adjusted his position so the wind didn’t reach her as much.

She noticed.

She didn’t say anything.

They shared small moments.

He waited for her when she was late.
She saved him a place to sit.

Once, their hands brushed when she passed him the cup of water. Neither of them pulled away immediately. Neither of them held on.

It was enough.

In those moments, the world felt quieter. Slower. Like it had finally learned to give them time instead of taking it away.

They never spoke about what they were.

They didn’t need to.

Being there, together, was already something gentle and complete.
